Qâjâr pencil box signed Naqash bashi Samir

Iran, dated 1337 H. / 1918

Papier-mâché and lacquered pencil box, painted in polychrome with gold highlights. On the top, in the central medallion, a full-length, three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman wearing a lavender European-style dress, a flowering branch in her left hand, flanked by two medallions featuring two three-quarter-length bust portraits of women on a black background embellished with gold arabesques. The lower medallion bears the artist's name "Naqash bashi Samir/ Le chef des peintres Samir" and the date "1337H./ 1918". The sides are decorated with cartouches depicting landscapes and animals, on a black background embellished with gilded arabesques. The base decorated with a frieze of gilded foliage on a black background. Length : 20 cm
