  • Description

[SYNAGOGUE - SHIVITI] Illuminated manuscript on paper.

Mediterranean basin, 19th century.

The Shiviti is a text placed before the officiating minister in synagogues. Its name derives from the first word of the psalm phrase: I fix my gaze constantly on the Lord. (Psalms 16:8). On our manuscript, the name of God that appears in this verse is written in large letters. Beneath this verse, a Menorah bearing Psalm 67 written in Hebrew in calligraphic form, as well as the utensils used to light it. Manuscript decorated with rosettes, columns and leafy frames. Sight size: 38.5 x 31 cm Provenance : Jean-Charles Tauzin Collection (1889-1957) We would like to thank Mr. Naftaly Fraenkel for presenting this lot.
