Turkey, Iznik circa 1590

Siliceous ceramic, with polychrome underglaze enamel decoration on a white background. Four red carnations and eight blue tulips make up the central bouquet. Marli with foaming waves. (Hanging holes, chips and hair). D. 27.5 cm Iznik ceramics, long known as Damascus or Rhodes, take their names from the centers of production, but also from the provenance of a collection, that of M. Salzmann (1824-1872). He had built up a collection from the dishes that adorned the bourgeois interiors of the island of Rhodes, earning them the name of the island...
