  • Description

Planispheric astrolabe

From a model executed for Bayazid II (1481-1512)

In brass with engraved decoration. The mater (mother), kursi (throne) and limb are cast in one piece, housing three double-sided spandrels, with a cleat under the throne to accommodate the plates' legs. The spider marks the position of 13 stars with their engraved names, and is enhanced by four silver mudir (little spider-turning nails). Engraved alidade and bird-shaped pin. D. 13 cm. D. 98 mm. Recent astrolabe in an eclectic style, combining the simplicity of Ottoman instruments from the 9th century A.H. [15th CE], with a throne inspired by Persian instruments, and silver mudîrs typical of Maghreb astrolabes. The instrument bears the inscription 'For the treasury of the great Sultan, the Sultan the son of the Sultan, Sultan Bayazīd Khan, the son of Muhammad Khan, May God perpetuate his reign'. Sultan Bāyazīd II, son of Muhammad II, reigned from 886-918 (CE 1481-1512) but errors in the construction of this instrument, the tautological inscription, and the light calligraphy, very similar to the double-sided astrolabe (next lot ), suggest a 20th century construction date. We would like to thank Mr. Anthony TURNER for his description of this lot. Provenance : Former collection of Mr. D. M. (1942-2017) A brass astrolabe, After a model made for Bayazid II (1481-1512)
