  • Description

Tabak dish from the collection of Théodore DECK

Turkey, Iznik, early 17th century

Round siliceous ceramic dish with polychrome enameled floral design in cobalt blue, brick red, green and manganese black. The central design features a bouquet of tulips and carnations around a saz leaf. The border is decorated with flowers and palmettes. Small flowers on the reverse (chips and slight restoration on the marli). The three labels on the back are as follows: Deck Collection, Muslim Art Exhibition n°1190, Rhodes. D. 26 cm Provenance : French private collection. Former Théodore Deck collection (1823-1891). Label on back. Exhibition and publication: Exposition d'Art Musulman, Paris, Palais de l'Industrie, 1893, no. 1190, published in the exhibition catalog. Iznik ceramics, long known as Damascus or Rhodes, take their names from the centers of production, but also from the provenance of a collection, that of M. Salzmann (1824-1872). He had built up a collection from the dishes that adorned the bourgeois interiors of the island of Rhodes, earning them the name of the island... The exhibition of these insider collections, the publication of the "Encyclopédie des arts décoratifs de l'Orient" around 1850, and the craze generated by the arts of Islam in the 19th century, became a source of inspiration for Western ceramists such as Théodore Deck (1823-1891). The latter was extremely talented, producing both original models and exact copies. The presence of works from his collection in the 1893 exhibition at the Palais de l'Industrie in Paris testifies to his deep interest in oriental productions, which he had copied - as close as possible to the original - in his factory. An Iznik glazed pottery dish, Turkey, 17th century, from the collection of the well-known French ceramist, Theodore Deck, exhibited in Paris in 1893.
