Hispano-Moorish dish with eagle

Spain, Manises, 15th century

Circular, wide sloping rim, with central umbilicus, in molded earthenware painted in golden-brown and cobalt-blue lustre on cream slip and stanniferous glaze. The umbilicus is painted in reserve on a blue-gray background, with a majestic eagle with outstretched wings surrounded by spiral arabesques. The wide border is also painted in reserve with flowers and palmettes, punctuated by swirling bunches of vines. The reverse features a central diamond motif, surrounded by concentric circles and wavy lines. (Broken and glued, two supension holes). D. 40 cm Provenance : Private collection, Paris.
