Ottoman Empire, 19th century

With bone or coral handle and tortoiseshell spoon. Slight accidents L: 22.5 and 25 cm This type of large spoon was mainly used for tasting sorbet, an icy granita covered in syrup that was very common at the Ottoman court, and which gave its name to French sorbet. They would have adorned only the most luxurious tables in Istanbul, in palaces such as Topkapi or in the homes of the nobility and wealthy merchants. Related work : J. M.
