ER ROHUNI Ahmed (1871-1953)

Rihla Al Makkia 1355_1356h (The Pilgrimage to Mecca in 1937). Ed. by L'Institut Général Franco pour les recherches hispano-arabes, Tetouan, Matba'atu al-Ahrar, 1941.

In-8, paperback, 247 pages with out-of-text photographic reproductions. Spotting on cover, inside fresh. Rare account of a Spanish pilgrimage to Mecca. General Franco, seeking to win the sympathy of the Muslim population of the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco (1912-1956), sought to revive the ancient links between Muslim Spain (Al Andalus) and North Africa, particularly Morocco. It was against this backdrop that Franco's Spain organized pilgrimages for its Muslim population, the first of which was in 1936-1937. This book looks back at this inaugural Spanish pilgrimage, whose ship (Domine) left Ceuta on January 29, 1937 for Mecca, via Spain and Libya, with 298 pilgrims on board. Ahmed Er Rohuni is a Moroccan ulama, historian and Minister of Justice. In 1937, he was responsible for accompanying the first delegation of Moroccan pilgrims under the aegis of Spain.
It gives details of the journey aboard the liner, the holy lands and, above all, the care taken to ensure that the pilgrims were well looked after; they were under the authority of a Spanish colonial officer and accompanied by a religious leader, a cadi, a doctor, an imam, two notaries, two muezzins and, for their safety, a detachment of Moroccan policemen. It also recounts the Libyan stage on the outward journey and the Italian stage (Naples) on the return.
