Indian seal

late 18th, early 19th century

Hindu lost-wax bronze seal depicting a spiral, probably a symbol of the god Vishnu. This seal was used to affix a yellow-safran mark to ritual garments. It is also used by Hindu priests to adorn the skin of devotees on their arrival at the temple. Provenance : Private collection of Mme H., Paris, assembled before 1990.
