  • Description

Félix ZIEM (Beaune 1821 - Paris 1911)

View from the East

Oil on panel, one board, not parqueted T 35 x 46 cm Signed lower right Ziem Our painting is to be compared with "La tour de Léandre Constantinople" exhibited at the centennale de l'Art Français, Paris 1900, n° 72, and reproduced in Anne Burdin- Hellebrandt, Félix Ziem, tome II; numéro1543, page 240 It was in 1856 that painter Felix Ziem first traveled to the Orient, from Constantinople to Greece via Lebanon. It was a journey from which he brought back numerous drawings and sketches, which he later used to create a multitude of paintings in his studio. Ziem set himself apart from other Orientalist painters of his time, thanks to a unique style of rendering light variations that lent a vaporous atmosphere to his paintings and a particular poetry. Provenance: Private collection, by inheritance
