Cup with white-blue decoration

Iran, Nayin region, (?), circa 1800

Siliceous ceramic with reperced and underglaze painted vegetal decoration, in cobalt tones and highlighted with manganese, in imitation of Chinese porcelain. Small chips. 9 x 9.5 cm Chinese porcelain was particularly popular at the Persian court. In response, Persian potters produced ceramics with blue-white decoration. To give the illusion of translucent porcelain, pieces such as this bowl were perforated with multiple holes.
