Tile with saz leaf

Turkey or Europe, 18th-19th centuries

Square-shaped siliceous ceramic, with turquoise, cobalt and manganese glazed decoration of saz leaves, pomegranate flowers and wild rose. 33 x 33 cm Provenance : Jean-Charles Tauzin Collection (1889-1957) Iznik ceramics, long known as Damascus or Rhodes, take their names from the centers of production, but also from the provenance of a collection, that of M. Salzmann (1824-1872). He had built up a collection from the dishes that adorned the bourgeois interiors of the island of Rhodes, earning them the name of the island... The exhibition of these insider collections, the publication of the "Encyclopédie des arts décoratifs de l'Orient" around 1850, and the craze generated by Islamic art in the 19th century, became a source of inspiration for many Western ceramists, who produced both original models and exact copies. An Iznik pottery tile, decorated with swirling saz leaf, Turkey or Europe, 18th - 19th century
